For every semester of Dark Data, each class will work towards a collaborative final project in the form of an online zine. You can find previous issues of the zine here.
The editorial and artistic theme for Fall 2022 is *Imagining Data.* This refers broadly to how data and machines imagine us, and vice versa (how we imagine them). This prompt aims to make the zine a collaborative effort to reclaim human agency and reimagine data infrastructures and their worlds through a critical, intersectional lens.
Midterm Proposal - Angelica Hom
My proposal was to record a podcast episode, whether it was an interview or in a narrative format. Some inspirations included Data & Society’s podcast and NPR’s A.I. Nation podcast. I had three ideas for the episode:
Why is it important for women to be leaders in AI ethics? Why do women need to be concerned with AI? What are your predictions for the future of the intersection between women and AI?
Potential guests:
Joy Buolamwini, Founder of the Algorithmic Justice League
Timnit Gebru, Co-founder of Black in AI
Mia Shah-Dand, Founder of Women in AI Ethics
Is this blueprint enough? Are there critical components that are missing? How could it be further improved?
Potential guests:
Safiya Umoja Noble, Co-Founder of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry
Yeshimabeit Milner, ****Co-founder of Data for Black Lives
Janet Haven, ****Executive Director of Data & Society
Why was it important to create and share this primer? What is your top pressing concern with AI in the majority world? What is your hope with AI from the majority world?
